PUBLIC SPACE
The places we share become part of everyday life through repetition: the route to work, a familiar crossing, a patch of shade, a place to wait.
Public Space explores how design can give these ordinary settings greater care, character and meaning. Roads, bridges, roundabouts and overlooked urban spaces offer opportunities to consider how a place is experienced, alongside how it functions.
The starting point is attention to what is already there: local history, landscape, materials, light and the ways people move through a setting. An intervention might reveal a neglected feature, create somewhere to pause, or give a familiar route a new point of interest.
Art and design can contribute at different scales, from a seat or a lighting proposal to a public installation. Each raises questions about its surroundings: what belongs here, who will encounter it, and what might it add to daily life?
The studies and proposals gathered here explore these possibilities, considering how practical needs and artistic expression can shape places with a distinctive identity and a lasting connection to their communities.
